Triage is founded on a philosophy of creative design. For us, it’s all about maximizing the potential of high-quality leather remnants, transforming them into individual works of handcrafted fashion.
The Triage approach leverages the hidden opportunity in materials which would otherwise be cast-off. Through planning and effort, the craftsperson and material together achieve a higher good.
Triage (Fr.) (n.) – the process of sorting, separating, selecting
Materials. Our process begins with the sourcing of leather from manufacturers who use only virgin materials, with any remaining pieces treated as “waste”. Through careful selection and processing, designers and leather craftspeople transform the unused materials into high-quality one-of-a-kind fashion accessories. Materials which would otherwise be discarded are thereby given a new life. With leathers ranging from from soft to rough and in a multitude of colours and textures, we develop products using these found materials in order to minimize waste while maximizing quality and individuality. All of our products are handmade and assembled with unrelenting attention to detail and quality.
Sorted. Triage, for us, refers both to the French verb ‘Trier’ meaning “to sort or select” as well as to the method used by emergency medical teams to prioritize and treat an excess of patients. We believe our approach is proof of the power of design to add significant value – literally turning trash into treasure.
Patchwork. Each patchwork item is arranged by hand with attention to composition, style and function. This allows us to make use of material remnants of various sizes and shapes while creating individual works of functional art, each with their own unique fingerprint.
Waste not. Our selection of products has been developed so as to make the fullest possible use of available material. Purses require larger pieces of material while wallets and tassels make use of even the smallest scraps generated in our studio.
